Adventures at PAX Prime 2015!

Hello everyone, Spocktopus here!

This year I got very lucky and had the privilege of attending he closing day of PAX Prime in Seattle. This particular gaming expo is notorious for selling out faster than I can humanly click so I was thankful to even be there for one day! 😀

Now this was mine and Sassy Goblin’s very first time attending PAX so saying we were overwhelmed would be an understatement. There is no possible way to experience all that PAX has to offer in one day so I highly recommend getting multiple day passes if you can!

PAX made me realize that I am indeed a darn casual player. *sobs* There were SO many games I had never even heard of being presented at PAX. I almost exclusively play Nintendo games so it is pretty much my own fault…But still!! SO MANY GAMES. I’m almost drooling at the thought of all the games I get to look forward to now (especially the indie ones) after seeing and experiencing so much at this expo.

Although it was but a brief experience I managed to finally learn how to play Magic the Gathering, snap a picture with some War Boys from Mad Max and witness the epicness that was the Omegathon.

There were displays that were absolutely out of this world and demos for so many interesting games!

Talking robots and massive guns and game demos, OH MYYYYY

There were also tons of interactive displays such as this one from Transistor!

There were also a ton of famous Youtubers attending such as Andre from Black Nerd Comedy (I didn’t get to see any of them sadly.. T^T) and some wonderful panelists. I was only able to attend two panels, one Q&A with the creators of Penny Arcade Gabe and Tycho (they were pee your pants hilarious) and another for the newest Master of Orion game. My friend who loves the Master of Orion games introduced us to what the game is all about and I must say this new one looks ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.

Here’s a cool announcement trailer for it!

IMG_8722You can’t tell from the picture but Benaroya Hall is PACKED at the final Omegathon challenge.

Perhaps the best part of our time at PAX was getting to see the final two Omegathoners battle it out at the final event of the evening. The Omegathon is an event where 20 people are randomly chosen out of all the attendees to duke it out in a series of games to win a trip to Japan. Now I didn’t get to see the first 18 people get eliminated, but the final round was definitely more than worth it. The final mystery game ended up being the recently released Mario Maker for he Wii U. Nintendo made a custom level JUST for the Omegathon and the first person to complete the level would win. Now these homies clearly were PC gamers and not experienced in the ways of Mario. THEY  DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO FLY AFTER GETTING THE CAPE FOR GOODNESS SAKE. For an hour the audience cheered and screamed for two men while they played Mario and it was absolutely glorious. We got to see the exact moment when these two champions learned how to play Mario and I couldn’t have been happier. I laughed, I screamed and I groaned in frustration but it was all in good fun. I now finally understand what it must feel like to be a sports fan.
Geek Wire did a great article on the frustration yet exhilaration that occured at the time.

All in all I would definitely recommend attending any PAX if you are into gaming! I’m definitely going to try my best to get a full 4 day pass next year! 😀

Now I just have to wait for all the Magic cards we just ordered…
