Cosplayer Removed From MomoCon

This past weekend was Phoenix Comicon and it was fantastic. The con goers, vendors, authors, actors, artists, con staff and the cosplayers were all in high spirits and having a great time. Many, myself included, believe it was the BEST con they have ever done. Another convention went on this weekend and that was MomoCon, a comic book convention held in Atlanta Georgia. Just as Phoenix Comicon, Momocon had it’s share of cosplayers, panels, events, and so much more. The major difference betwen the two was that a major cosplayers was forced to leave the convention earlier than expected.

The outfit that she wore when she was forced to leave.

Luna Lanie Cosplay is, as you guessed it, a cosplayer who attended the convention this past weekend and was the removed from the convention. She explains the situation to her fans on the youtube video posted below. From her story she tells of how she went to the convention and was harassed quite a bit both physically and mentally, when she complained to the staff they did little to resolve the issue. She then took to social media to voice her frustrations. When she did so, she was then approached by the heads of the convention. They met and talked about ways to resolve the issue. She brought up the very common ‘Cosplay is not consent’ reminder that can be seen every where at conventions nowadays. They listened and then admitted to feeling hurt bythe negative comments. They parted ways and continued the convention.

Unfortunately, sometime after, as reported by Luna Lanie, she was surrounded by security being informed that various people complained about her cosplay. When she tried to reach out to those who she met with before, they told her that had she not complained about the convention, perhaps she wouldn’t have these issues. That is some godfather type poop right there. In the movies it is terrifying and powerful but in real life, it just makes you an asshole. She was forced to leave immediately, having to rush to grab her props and inform her friends.

Later that day she posted this video:

My personal thoughts on the matter is that Luna was wronged. She did not feel safe and when she asked for help it led down a path that resulted in her being removed from the convention. That is not how situations where cosplayers feel unsafe should be treated. Yes, they are scantily clad. No, that never gives another person the right to harass them sexually, physically, or emotionally. the fact that the higher up members of the convention staff acted so poorly is a clear sign that they need to readjust their staff and ideals in order to better accommodate those who attend. Further reports are coming in that Momocon have yet to apologize for the incident and continue to blame others.

What are your thoughts on this?

My thoughts on this? She should sue MomoCon. I will never go there. I go to cons a lot – just got back from AnimeNorth in fact – & Atlanta is close. But this? Oh, no.
