Kikori Con 2018: Unexpected Winter Wonderland

By Heartless Aquarius

Hey everyone! Heartless Aquarius here with another convention review! I had the pleasure of going up to Kikori Con again. It was amazing to be back!

The convention was held at the Little America hotel in Flagstaff, Arizona. I love this hotel so much. Not only is it surrounded in beautiful scenery for photos, but it is also close to many food options. If you’re lucky, there may even be snow! This year we were lucky and did have snow on the ground during the convention, a rarity for Arizona.

Since Kikori Con is a relatively small anime convention, it is fairly cheap. As with most conventions, the price of badges depends on when they were purchased. Last minute badges at the door were $50, however they could be around $35 if you purchased the badge during the early bird time frame. The hotel block was reasonable, discounted to $104 per night, which is $30-90 cheaper than the usual room rate at the Little America. There were also cheaper hotels, motels, and Air BnBs close to the convention location.

Kikori Con is what I would call a casual convention. The vibe is very relaxed and everyone is there to hang out and have a good time. It is also a great convention to get gorgeous outdoor and winter photos. If it is too cold, then the interior of the hotel is also great for stunning photographs. Kikori Con had a powerhouse of guests. Not only were there many voice actors and cosplayers, but they were all incredibly kind and friendly people. It was easy to approach them and have a conversation. If you had money burning a hole in your pocket, the vendor hall had a wide variety of vendors and artists. It was so much fun looking at all of the unique art, figures, and other merchandise all weekend. There were many other events and activities that ran over the weekend, such as the gaming room, panels, maid cafes, cosplay chess, and more.

The only odd thing about the convention is how it would occasionally feel very empty. This was probably due to the fact that the convention pushed it’s event date back from November to late February. This made it land on the same weekend as Wild Wild West Con in Tucson and Emerald City Comic Con, making the attendance lower than usual. Kikori Con should not have this issue next year since it won’t overlap with so many other events.

Overall, Kikori Con is a fantastic small convention. The size, location, and guests make it an amazing experience. With con season coming up, it’s nice to have a relaxed convention with friends before the summer craziness starts. Kikori Con has something for everyone and I highly recommend it, especially if you have not been to a small convention in a while. Be sure to check out all the great content offered by Heartless Aquarius and Chocozumo who took the photos!
