Interview with Missy Suicide, Co-Owner of the SuicideGirls on the Blackheart Burlesque and More!

We have so much respect for SuicideGirls because of how awesome their content is when it comes to photography and representation of alternative beauty! Gazing at powerful women and their incredible tattoos is similar to checking out an online museum to view fine art. Every year they throw their own burlesque show called the Blackheart Burlesque and we love it to bits!

In anticipation to this year’s event we got to interview the co-owner and founder of the SuicideGirls, Missy Suicide!

The Geek Lyfe: The Blackheart Burlesque is one of our favorite events to look forward to each year. But there may be people out there who are not familiar with this show. Could you take a moment to explain what it is?

Missy Suicide: The show is nerdy, dirty fun.  Each number has a different pop culture theme that a sexy burlesque dance is set to.  Think Spiderman, Game of Thrones, Sailor Moon as sexy highly choreographed strip teases set to the best soundtrack you can imagine.  All performed by the talented and beautiful diverse range of SuicideGirls.   It is a truly fun show with some audience participation, humor and sexy body positive dancing.  You have to come to the show and see if you can catch all the references.

The Geek Lyfe: What is your personal favorite aspect of the Blackheart Burlesque?

Missy Suicide: My favorite part of the Blackheart burlesque is getting out on the road and meeting all of the fans and getting to work with some amazing dancers.  The whole tour is just such an amazing opportunity to get out there and share a fun evening full of love and positivity with the fans across the country.  The energy in a blackheart burlesque show is truly incredible.

The Geek Lyfe: What I love most about this event is all of the changes that happen with each show. Sometimes they can be subtle differences in performers or major changes in entire skits. Over the years, is there any performance in particular that you are fond of?

Missy Suicide: My all time favorite is the Planet of the Apes number because it was the very first one that we came up with for the show so long ago.  It was set to Disclosures “When A Fire Starts to Burn” and featured Barabarella style silver bikinis and girls in gorilla masks.   But I get excited for the new numbers every year my favorite is always changing.  I am soooooo excited for “Spiderman” this year it is an into the spiderverse routine that is just the bomb.

The Geek Lyfe: Right now, the SuicideGirls and the Blackheart Burlesque are wildly popular and beloved by so many fans. But going back to the first year of the Blackheart Burlesque, what challenges did you face back then? How different was it from the show we have today?

Missy Suicide: Oh man, back then we didn’t know how to tour, the logistics of having 10 girls on the road were so much more of a nightmare.  It was tougher because people didn’t know what to expect so the first few numbers the audience would always be a bit quiet but then by the middle of the show people were screaming.  Now it is such love, we know what we are doing, we love to see the fans that have come out year after year and meet all the new faces.  It is a lot of fun.

The Geek Lyfe: As a co-owner of the SuicideGirls you no doubt had had to wear a lot of hats in order to ensure the success of the brand. What aspect of the business do you enjoy helping with the most?

Missy Suicide: I love when I get to be creative first and foremost, like helping to create new routines, the soundtrack is my baby.  Now that the site is 18 years old though and I have been able to do so much with the brand personally the most joy I get on a daily basis is from mentoring the girls who work for me and helping them to see success.  There is no greater joy than seeing someone you care about succeed.

The Geek Lyfe: There are a lot of content creators out there who feel as though their goals and passions are daunting. What advice do you have for them someone had told you when you first started your business?

Missy Suicide: People who say “Find something you love doing and you will never work a day in your life” are probably not very successful.  Like any worthwhile relationship doing what you love takes hard work, fights, sleepless nights, sacrifice and sweat.  The difference is that you get the satisfaction of seeing what you love out there in the world, and seeing how the world reacts and appreciates what you created makes it all worth it, but man it will be the hardest you ever work in your life.

The Geek Lyfe: Where can we find out more about the SuicideGirls and the Blackheart Burlesque?

Missy Suicide: You can get tickets and find all of the dates at blackheartburlesque.com  You can follow all of the performers and our social at allmylinks.com/blackheartburlesque!
Thanks again to the SuicideGirls and Missy Suicide for taking the time to answer a few of our questions! Be sure to check out the Blackheart Burlesque when it comes into a town near you!
