The Invisible Man Review by 3lyssa
The Invisible Man is a 2020 horror/mystery/sci-fi film written and directed by Leigh Whannell. Whannell is well known within the horror community, but for those outside of it may best know him for his work on Saw. The Invisible Man is based off of the book The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells. The cast boosts such talent as Elisabeth Moss, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid, and Harriet Dyer.
The movie opens up with a nerve-wracking scene and my anxiety did not calm down for the next two hours. You’re thrown into this very intense world of Cecilia Kass, played by Elisabeth Moss, as she executes an elaborate plan of escape from her abusive boyfriend. With the help of her sister and childhood friend she goes into hiding and does not come out until the news of her ex’s suicide. Despite the evidence supporting his demise, Cecilia suspects that her ex-boyfriend’s death was a wild hoax orchestrated by his wealth and scientific brilliance. The film continues to follow Cecilia’s struggles with if her ex is still alive, or is she keeping the idea of him alive?
Going in I was trying to keep an open mind about this movie. I’m a lover of older horror movies and can be pretty quick to judge modern horror. A few weeks before I was given the opportunity to preview this movie, I brushed up on the classic story by H.G. Wells. While a good read no matter the occasion, it wasn’t necessarily going into this modern take on the classic Universal Monster. I loved the small nods to other horror movies in this film. Some obvious, and some subtle.
This movie is not for everyone. If you enjoy horror and psychological thrillers this film is for you! If you stick to Disney, stay away. My biggest trigger warning would be for those that have been directly affected by domestic violence.
Overall I’d give this one 5 out of 5 stars. This was the hardest part of my review to admit. This movie made me anxious, it made me cry, it had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Was it hard to watch? Without a doubt. Overall it was an incredibly executed film from writing to acting, to the effects.
You can watch the official trailer HERE! The Invisible Man has a US release of Friday, February 28, 2020, and has a runtime of just over 2 hours. Let me know if you decide to check It out! If you enjoy the film, please consider checking out more projects by Blumhouse.
Many thanks to The Internation Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival for the opportunity to watch this gem early.
