SuicideGirls: Blackheart Burlesque Review
SuicideGirls: Blackheart Burlesque Review
As a woman who has donned facial piercings, blue hair, and tattoos, SuicideGirls has always been near and dear to my heart. These women promote confidence and beauty within themselves as opposed to trying to meet the standards set by others. In addition to being absolutely stunning, SuicideGirls put on a show called Blackheart Burlesque which features fantastic choreography and shows off the true athleticism of these ladies. As if that weren’t amazing enough, they added tons of geek themes as well.
The show description boasts that it will be “filled with pop-culture reference” and it delivers tenfold. Every dance had a recognizable theme from cult classics like Donnie Darko and A Clockwork Orange to nerdy staples like The Legend of Zelda and Star Wars. These women took media that I could never imagine being sexy and completely opened my eyes to how easily that could change. The performers emit so much positive energy that the crowd couldn’t get enough. While each song brought seductive moves by gorgeous women, they were also paired with acts of physical strength. These women aren’t only a stunning sight but are athletic as well. Dancing these routines can’t be easy and they do so for multiple hours. Yet, they make it seem effortless.
As if each new dance that unfolded wasn’t enough, these ladies showed off even more talent. This lovely woman on the left in particular, Sunny Holiday. She sauntered onto the stage dressed as a Hogwarts student, elder wand in hand, and broke into song. She belted out a Harry Potter inspired version of the song “You Know I’m No Good” by Amy Winehouse while singing as though she were Hermione. Later in the show, she stepped out and wowed the audience with another twist to a classic. “Part of Your World” will never be the same and I can’t even be mad about it. Her voice was melodic and the perfect pairing for these songs. I must say that this part of the show was a total surprise and I loved every moment of it.
Audience interaction? Could it get any better!? To break up the routines there was a variety of activities to get the crowd involved. While choosing a favorite moment of this show is an impossible task, a couple of them had to do with audience participation. A chosen couple got lessons on how to do a sultry lap dance and the lucky lady even got some attention from Liryc Suicide. A “nerd” was plucked from the crowd and asked to do a fifth grade reading comprehension test while the gorgeous Peneloppe fought for his attention. Somehow, someway, he nailed it and enjoyed an up-close view that left the audience envious. When asked what his secret was, he casually said, “You just read it before she takes her clothes off.”
It is impossible to sum up this experience in even a few words. Not only are these women a treat for the eyes, but this show is a treat for the soul. Every second was so much fun and packed with entertainment. The pop-culture references and costumes are endless and on point. Additionally, I’d like to take a moment to talk about the confidence that radiates from these ladies. They love their bodies and enjoy flaunting them. Missy Suicide (one of the co-founders of SuicideGirls) even mentions their focus on confidence in our earlier interview with her. That is a fantastic message that can easily be seen in every act. This was, by no means, just a show to watch sexy women take their clothes off. The Blackheart Burlesque show was one of the most unique, entertaining, and fun experiences that I’ve had the pleasure of attending.
