Alex Garland on 28 Months Later
It should probably come as no surprise to any one that we here at Geek Lyfe love zombies. From comic books to table top role playing games, if it has shambling corpses yearning to feast on the flesh of the living, we are all in! So naturally, we fell in love with 28 Days later and 28 weeks later as they offered us accents, fast zombies, and almost no hope for humanity. But where is 28 Months later?
Indiewire caught up with Ex Machina director Alex garland and questioned him on whether or not he would continue the 28 series. Garland said a 28 Months later is moving forward with Andrew McDonald, who was the producer for the first two 28 films and various other ones. Needless to say, the man has the credits to place our hope in.
Originally, however, Garland did not want even a sequel to 28 Days Later and was only the executive producer and had no interest in a third film.
“The rights to ‘28 Days’ were frozen, effectively, because they were shared between Danny [Boyle], [producer] Andrew [McDonald], myself, and Fox,” he said. “After the second one, none of us really wanted to do another. Fox may or may not have, I don’t know.”
Nevertheless, the film is moving forward. I can understand where Garland is coming from as far as not enjoying sequels. Most of the time, writers set out to write one, great story. Once the fans start banging for more and studios see the money flowing in, they rush to get a second movie out the door but it often loses it’s quality. I hope whoever takes on the role of director for 28 Months Later will do it justice.
Worst comes to worst, we still have an awesome new zombie flick on the horizon!
