Browser gaming just won’t die, led by casinos, Wordle and the .io boom
The day that Adobe announced that they would no longer support Flash was the day when many people assumed that browser gaming was on its deathbed. Without Flash, how could browser gaming possibly survive? There were preemptive outpourings of grief over the end of an era, especially one that held such strong nostalgic memories for so many people.
In reality, this is far from what ended up happening. As it turns out, people’s love for browser games was strong enough that they created workarounds to ensure their favorite Flash games would continue to function even after Flash was gone. More than that, though, people have embraced browser games as a great way to fill time without having to make the same commitment that investing in a console or a gaming PC requires.
Besides resurrected Flash games, what else has led to the browser game renaissance? Three of the main contributors are online casinos, word games like Wordle, and the .io boom.
Online Casinos
Online casinos have played a huge role in the survival of browser games. Over the last decade, online casinos have gradually been taking over more and more of the market from traditional land-based casinos. In the last two years, that rate has drastically increased as land-based casinos closed temporarily due to the global situation. With these casinos closed, people who had never played online realized that online casinos are more accessible, more convenient, and often more fun than their land-based counterparts.
When talking about online casinos, many people focus on the mobile aspect since online slots have so much in common with mobile games. In reality, the desktop browser version of most online casinos is usually better and it’s where a huge number of players prefer to play.
For starters, the desktop browser version usually has a bigger library of games and, depending on the phone, will have better graphics and less lag.
Many of the newest online casinos are among the best available. This is partly because they’ve been able to learn from their competitors who have been around longer. Seeing what good decisions and mistakes others have made sets out a good road map for success for new casinos.
Another reason for the success of newer online casinos is that technology keeps developing, and as game companies realize how lucrative the market is, they invest more resources into making interesting and engaging games. This is great for both serious gamblers and for those of us who just love good games.
The Wordle phenomenon
Word games have always been popular online. Crossword puzzles were one of the early newspaper bonus features to make a successful jump from print to digital. And the audience for word puzzles isn’t just retirees trying to keep their brains buzzing.
The Wordle phenomenon has shown us just how big the market for word games is. In case you’ve somehow managed to miss it, Wordle is a daily game where you have six guesses to find the chosen five-letter word of the day. After making your first guess, the game tells you, by using different colors, if your guess contains a correct letter in the correct spot, or if it has a correct letter but it belongs in a different place in the word.
It’s easy to see the appeal of the game. In a world of addictive mobile games that are designed to make you spend all your time (and money) to progress, a game where you can only play once each day, for a few minutes at most, is very refreshing.
.io
.io is a top-level domain that has boomed in popularity over the last few years. As the internet has grown, the .com domain has come to account for almost half of all web addresses, which can make it hard for a new company or game to find the perfect domain name.
Enter alternative domains, like .io. Since the abbreviation “IO” is already associated with tech – it stands for input/output – it has become the go-to domain for indie browser-game developers.
For years the advertising push for console and PC gaming was that the graphics were always getting better, the worlds more immersive. While this is an important part of gaming, the success of games that have a more simple design, such as Among Us, has shown audiences and developers that looks aren’t everything.
Browser games are a perfect example of how important function is over form. Most don’t have the most amazing graphics but they are engaging, creative, and fun to play.
