Cosplayer In Crisis: Nicole Marie Jean
Cosplayer In Crisis: Nicole Marie Jean
Many times in life, mine especially, we tend to take our health for granted, if we get sick we simply shrug it off not wanting to get it checked up in fear of having to spend money at the doctor. Some folks are proactive with their health and get checked up regularly, hoping to knock out any and all potential problems. However, for artists, content creators, novelists or any one with a nontraditional job they tend to take the route of just not having health insurance at all because it can be so expensive when you are already trying to make a dollar of of fifteen cents doing your craft full time. The story of friends doing whatever they can, even to the point of simply suffering from horrible illnesses using only over the counter medication as remedies to avoid spending their hard earned cash on expensive medical bills. Unfortunately, there are times in life when you simply have no choice but to turn to hospitals for support. One such incident is appendicitis.
Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, a 3 1/2-inch-long tube of tissue that extends from the large intestine. No one is absolutely certain what the function of the appendix is. One thing we do know: We can live without it, without apparent consequences.
Appendicitis is a medical emergency that requires prompt surgery to remove the appendix. Left untreated, an inflamed appendix will eventually burst, or perforate, spilling infectious materials into the abdominal cavity. This can lead to peritonitis, a serious inflammation of the abdominal cavity’s lining (the peritoneum) that can be fatal unless it is treated quickly with strong antibiotics.
Which brings us to cosplay Nicole Marie Jean who had no choice but to seek medical attention for the surgery. Being uninsured due to the insane costs of health insurance that would cut into her already immense living/traveling expenses, when the bills came, they came hard. Ranging in the tens of thousands of dollars. Earlier this year she was able to pay off her initial bill but recently was billed for another $44,000.
I sympathize with Nicole for the simple fact that I too went through the exact same situation. I was 21 years old and in college working a part time job to help pay off my college tuition when my appendix decided it was time to go. During that time I was in between insurances and was uninsured, having to face $11,000 in medical bills. Overwhelmed by the amount, I finished my associates degree and dropped all hopes of attending a university because I could not stomach the thought of adding so much more debt on my already immense debt that came from simply having an organ fail on me. I am still to this day making payments to get rid of the debt which will still not happen for years. (If you’d like to help donate, click here!)
This is an issue that affects so many men and women aspiring to leave the 9 to 5 in order to chase their passion. It’s terrible that these hardworking people constantly come to the conclusion that it’s better risk being uninsured rather than partnering with privatized health insurance and who could fault them for it knowing the amount taken from their profits every month. While options do now exist like Obama Care, this may not be an option for much longer with the new presidency taking place in a few months.
We were able to catch Nicole during a convention in the UK and she was nothing short of fantastic both in her cosplayer and personality as she showed us, a humble website, kindness in answering a few of our questions.
In the meantime, I encourage all readers to help out in any way they can to support those in need. While Nicole Marie Jean might be a wonderful cosplayer with a throng of supporters, facing a $44,000 medical bill is intense no matter who faces it. We’ll be donating what we can to her in hopes it helps out! We appreciate you taking your time out of your busy day to read this article and understand a bit more about the unfortunate situations folks in entertainment face!
