Cosplayer of the Month: Katybear
Cosplayer of the Month: Katybear
Back in 2011 I was a bright eyed geek who just discovered the massive world of cosplay. I instantly became a fan of Jessica Nigri, Rosanna Rocha, and none other than the incredible: Katybear! I pride myself on meeting as many cosplayers I adore at Phoenix Comicon, but unfortunately I always seem to miss Katy.
Now that I run my own blog and have a cosplay section, it was a no brainer that I would reach out to Katybear for an interview, right? Well gathering the courage to write to a woman you adore is much more difficult than it would seem.
Despite my shaky hands as I typed to her, I was able to send off an interview request and she immediately responded and even agreed to answer a few of our questions! She is a wonderful person, an amazing cosplayer and before I go on for hours, let’s get to the interview!
The Geek Lyfe:Â Although I have been a fan of yours for quite some time, there may be a few Geek Lyfers who have not seen your work before, would you be alright introducing yourself?
Katybear:Â My name is Katy, I have been cosplaying since 2011. I make all of my own cosplays.I really love animals, and I own two cats, Battlecat and Kratos.
TGL:Â How long have you been into cosplay and what led you down this path?
Katybear: I have been cosplaying for about 4 years now. I have always loved dressing up since I was young (being born on Halloween helped a lot). I hadn’t heard of cosplay until 2011, and once I found out about it and that was that!
TGL: What has been your favorite moment?
Katybear: Every time someone tells me that they like my cosplay, I love it when people appreciate the time and work that goes into what I do.
TGL: Most frustrating?
Katybear:Â I used to get really frustrated with trolls, but I have gained a tougher skin since I started. The main thing that bugs me now is this whole “fake nerd girl” thing. I feel like a lot of people want you to somehow prove to them that you are a “real” nerd, or just don’t believe you no matter what. Anyone should be able to cosplay, it doesn’t matter what sex, age, or background you come from!
TGL: When you aren’t doing this, what do you do in your spare time?
Katybear:Â I enjoy reading, playing video games (especially Dragon Age Inquisition), sewing, working out, and horseback riding.
TGL: What geek medium(Video Games, Comic Books, Novels, Movies etc.) made the biggest impact on your life and why?
Katybear:Â Definitely video games. I have been playing since I was a small child. My first system was a Super Nintendo. My first games were Super Mario Brothers and Super Ghouls and Ghosts. I have been hooked ever since!
TGL: Zombie apocalypse has begun and the world needs to be saved from walking corpses. Which character that you have cosplayed in the past do you become and take their powers to help you in your mission?
Katybear:Â Definitely Supergirl, since she can fly. As far as I know zombies don’t fly, so I could combat them from the air!
TGL:Â Do you have any projects in the near future we should be excited to see?
Katybear: Another Supergirl costume is in the works! I am working hard to make it as detailed as my last one. 😀
TGL:Â What advice do you have for any aspiring cosplayers out there?
Katybear:Â Don’t give up! You will mess up a lot, and get super frustrated, but that is how you will learn. Keep at it and you will get better. Having a positive attitude is the most important thing!
A very huge thank you to Katybear for taking the time to answer a few of our questions. She is incredible in so many ways that she without a doubt deserves a look! Here is her main cosplay page where you can find out more about her, her craft, and anything else! Alll photos are from her page.Â
