Cosplayer Of The Week: Shellanin
The Cosplayer of the Week is a great cosplayer by the name of Shellanin ! I actually found her work on Tumblr while scrolling for entertaining content and I just fell in love with her work! Although she might still be indie, she shows so much potential for being a fantastic cosplayer in the near future.
Until then, I vowed to try and help her out in any way I could, including interviewing her on her as a
person and her craft! I hope you enjoy this week’s interview, I know I did!
The Geek Lyfe:Â Although I have been a fan of yours for quite some time, there may be a few Geek Lyfers who have not seen your work before, would you be alright introducing yourself?
Shellanin: My name is Shell. I’m also known as Otaku Skum and Inutrashha but my cosplay page is called Spider-Bae cosplay. I’m at 21 year old (22 in a few weeks!) that was born in Brooklyn, New York but I currently reside in Atlanta, GA.
TGL:Â How long have you been into cosplay and what led you down this path?
S: I’ve been into cosplay for about 6 years now. It all started because I’m a HUGE anime fan and I loved going to cons to shop for merch. Seeing all of the cosplayers made me want to try it out myself! I’ve been doing it as a small hobby for most of my cosplaying years and just decided to start taking it seriously last year
TGL:Â What has been your favorite moment?
S: My favorite part of being a cosplayer is being able to share the final result with others. When my Miles Morales cosplay went viral it was really exciting.
TGL:Â What was the worst day for you in your cosplay career, what happened, and how did you deal with it.
S: Unfortunately my favorite moment of my cosplay career was also a bad experience due to all of the reposting of my cosplay people did without crediting me. Since I didn’t have a cosplay page at the time and I only posted the photo on tumblr, a lot of people reposted it on Facebook, Twitter and other sites without linking to my page. Some people even reposted the photos on tumblr without crediting me. It was overwhelming having my photo posted everywhere without my permission. The only way I could deal with it was to message people that I saw reposting my photos without crediting me and ask them to add a link to my page. The best thing I got from dealing with it was that a lot of people stood up for me and asked others to credit my photos. I met a lot of nice people through that experience.
TGL: When you aren’t doing this, what do you do in your spare time?
S: I’m an art student at college so in my spare time I’m usually working on art projects and when I’m not doing that my most definitely binging anime or playing video games lolol.
TGL:Â What geek medium(Video Games, Comic Books, Novels, Movies etc.) made the biggest impact on your life and why?
S: I’m going to have to say both video games and anime has made the largest impact on my life. I’ve learned so much from both of them as a child and even now! They’re still my favorite thing to do and kind of (maybe not kind of) my life source lolol.
TGL:Â What costume would you say is your favorite so far?
S: My Miles Morales cosplay is my favorite so far! It’s was my first step into taking my cosplay seriously.
TGL:Â Time for the hardest question of all: If you had to live the rest of your life as a Pokemon, which one would it be and why?
S: Oh jeez, that is a hard question lolol. I’m going to have to go with Mega Lopunny. She’s pretty damn tough and pretty damn cute! Lol. She’s also on my cosplay in the future list!
TGL:Â Do you have any projects in the near future we should be excited to see?
S: Oh yes! The cosplay I have planned for Halloween is amazing. I’ve been working on it on the low. I’m super excited about it! And you guys should be too
TGL:Â What advice do you have for any aspiring cosplayers out there?
S: Aspiring cosplayers, never let the fear of people judging you hold you back from doing a cosplay that you really want to do. Never let how you look hold you back from doing a cosplay you really want to do. Cosplaying comes from the heart so be sure to follow yours when you’re cosplaying! Stay strong and never let anyone hold you back from doing something you love.
I want to give a huge shout out to Shellanin for taking the time to answer a few of our questions! She is a fantastic cosplayer who is wonderful in every way! I highly recommend you all take a few moments to check her and her cosplay out! You can find her main page on her Facebook!
