Cosplayer of the Week: RoxyRoo Cosplay
This Cosplayer of the Week is none other than RoxyRoo Cosplay! She is a cosplayer based out of Arizona and came highly recommended to me by another lovely cosplayer, Kaypickle! RoxyRoo is one of those hidden gems that doesn’t get the amount of attention she deserves! RoxyRoo tackles everything from armor crafting to Final Fantasy characters! I was surprised but the amount of quality of her work and the sheer dedication she has to her craft!
I only got to chat with her a few times but her personality spilled through her text and I genuinely want to be her friend and hang out during conventions! I hope you enjoy this week’s cosplayer because she is wonderful! Also, fun fact: she also has a Twin by the name of Suzy and has helped her out with cosplay since the beginning!
The Geek Lyfe:Â Although I have been a fan of yours for quite some time, there may be a few Geek Lyfers who have not seen your work before, would you be alright introducing yourself?
RoxyRoo Cosplay:  Hello. I’m RoxyRoo, a cosplayer, comic book artist, and chocolate lover. Lots of C’s.
TGL:Â How long have you been into cosplay and what led you down this path?
RRC: I started sewing costumes for the renaissance festival around the time the Lord of the Rings trilogy came out. I wanted to be an elf. But then Anime Expo 2006 happened. I didn’t realize you could imitate characters like that. Ten years later, here I am, still at it.
TGL:Â Â What has been your favorite moment?
RRC:  You’re making me pick one? Hmm… I got chased up a tree once by fangirls. I was cross-playing as Reno from FFVII: Advent Children at the time. I was like… 30 feet off the ground!
TGL:Â Â What was the worst day for you in your cosplay career, what happened, and how did you deal with it.
RRC: I think I’ve flown under the radar for the most part. My FB cosplay page is only just now closing in on 1000 followers. That being said, last year’s PCC was a big bummer. We had just finished filming Space Rangers with Atomic Age Pictures and were debuting episode 1 that night. To promote it I was supposed to don the Robot costume I had made for the show, but when we unboxed it from the last shoot it was completely destroyed. Seams undone, hot glue melted, pieces crushed… I was in shock. The day got worse from there, but I zombied through it. I was with friends for the rest of the night. Friends are the best cure for bad days. I also learned from the experience. Now I use Barge glue for foam seams.
TGL: When you aren’t doing this, what do you do in your spare time?
RRC:  I have way too many hobbies! Mostly I draw online comics. It’s called NeverFall if you want to check it out. I also play videogames like Halo and Destiny. Although it’s too hot right now, outdoor things like hiking and archery. It’s possible to shoot at night, but with 120 degree weather hitting this weekend the only thing I’ll be doing outside is jumping into the pool.
TGL:Â What geek medium(Video Games, Comic Books, Novels, Movies etc.) made the biggest impact on your life and why?
RRC: Comics. Ever since my dad bought me my first Spider-Man comic when I was in Jr. High, I’ve been drawing my own ever since. I was actually published for a while with P2 Manga LLC with my debut manga The Glass River, but the company shut down. I’ve been doing independent comics ever since. I can lose myself for hours in it.
TGL:Â What costume would you say is your favorite so far?
RRC: My Halo: Reach Spartan, hands down. Lightning is a close second. But there’s nothing like walking around in full armor. I’ve met many of my friends because of it. Got to go to a Halo release event in L.A. because of it. I wore it for 3 years, wore it out completely. Now it stands proudly in my room on a mannequin. Best decoration ever. Haha
TGL:Â Time for the hardest question of all: Squirtle, Charmander, or Bulbasaur? Could you explain the reason for your choice?
RRC: Charmander. For survival purposes of course. It can boil your water, cook your food, and keep predators at bay simply because they don’t like fire. When it eventually evolves to Charizard it can even fly you home.
TGL:Â Do you have any projects in the near future we should be excited to see?
RRC: Remember that Spartan I mentioned? (whispers) I’m making a new one…
TGL:Â What advice do you have for any aspiring cosplayers out there?
RRC: Look up tutorials, use patterns, coupons, wait for sales, and never be afraid to ask for advice or help. In my experience, the cosplayers are usually more than happy to give pointers or tell you where they bought that awesome wig. For anyone getting into cosplay, never forget to have fun. Have the time of your life making and wearing it. If not, what’s the point?
I want to give a huge thank you RoxyRoo Cosplay for taking the time to answer a few of our humble questions! She is such a sweet person and I’m so glad Kaypickle helped point us in her direction! Be sure to follow her on Facebook for more awesome!
