Junkyard Joe #1: Special Black & White Veterans Edition is a special edition comic series that follows the story of a robotic soldier who, after returning home, begins to question everything he knows. The comic is filled with action-packed artwork and touching moments that are sure to resonate with readers.
Johns is a widely-admired American writer in the comic book, screenwriting, and film and television industries. He has received critical acclaim for his work on DC Comics characters Green Lantern, Aquaman, Flash, and Superman. But Junkyard Joe #1 has a special message:
“Although the first issue of Junkyard Joe is set in the middle of the Vietnam War and depicts graphic violence in the jungles, the majority of the story takes place today. In the present. Ultimately, it’s a hopeful, fun, and action-packed comic book, which I think readers will be surprised by, that builds the next block of the Geigerverse.”
If you’ve somehow missed the mindblowing Geiger story, here’s a quick background:
Out in the radioactive wasteland lives a man that even the creatures of the night fear. His name is Geiger, but some people call him Joe Glow or the Meltdown Man. After a nuclear war destroyed civilization as we know it, those who survive now scavenge and fight for their lives in a world of chaos.
Junkyard Joe #1 starts in the Vietnam War several decades before the events of Geiger. The focus is on Muddy Davis, who becomes a famous cartoonist and hero in a comic strip. Junkyard Joe is a tough fighter in 1972 during a bloody war. Muddy and his friends will discover what it costs to make sure they survive the battle. Geiger takes place in the same world, but this story can be read alone too. (But if you read Junkyard Joe, you will want to jump into the entire Geigerverse)/
Junkyard Joe is more than just a comic book; it’s a way to honor those who have served our country. All too often, veterans find themselves struggling upon returning home from combat. Homelessness, mental illness, and stores of horrific memories make it difficult to return to a normal American life.
According to a recent Housing and Urban Development (HUD) report, 19,750 American veterans were without homes in 2021 and forced to take shelter. Veterans are eight percent of all adults experiencing homelessness in the United States. In Junkyard Joe #1, Johns and Frank seek to help those veterans by giving them a voice and raising awareness for their cause.
Junkyard Joe #1: Special Black & White Veterans is on sale now, and 100% of the proceeds will go to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans in honor of Johns’ grandfather and to Veterans Aid in honor of Frank’s grandparents in honor of their service in World War II. Pick up your copy today!
The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) is a resource providing supportive housing, food, health services, job training and placement assistance, legal aid, and case management support to hundreds of thousands of homeless veterans every year.
