Learn the Fundamentals of CS:GO

A Brief Guide to CS:GO

CS:GO is one of the best First-Person Shooters in esports. Launched in August 2012 and played by over 10 million people around the globe, this game is an absolute sensation and a worthy continuation of the Counter-Strike series. Its professional circuit is vibrant, with dozens of big tournaments taking place throughout the year. Each of them offers high-quality entertainment and numerous CS:GO betting opportunities.

How CS:GO Is Played

CS:GO is a team-based game. At the professional level, matches take place between 2 teams of 5 players and on multiple maps. There are 7 of them in total and the competitors get to pick some of them. In a Bo1, 6 maps are banned and the one that’s left will be picked. In a Bo3, each side gets to ban 2 maps and pick 1. The 7th map, that is left in the pool, will be played 3rd if the score is 1 – 1 after the first two maps.

As you can imagine, each of the official maps is completely different and gives you the possibility to be highly creative in your approach. In that sense, CS:GO is an esport for people with great spatial memory and intelligence. Because at all times, you’re trying to figure out where the enemy will be and then shoot him before he shoots you.

But CS:GO demands more than this. The game requires phenomenal patience, good communication skills, lightning-fast reactions, shooting accuracy, and composure. Its main elements are the following:

The Bomb

The two teams, called Terrorists (better known as the T side) and Counter-Terrorists (better known as the CT side) have opposite objectives. The T side needs to either kill the entire enemy team or plant the bomb and make sure it explodes, which happens around 45 seconds after it has been planted. The CT side needs to either kill the enemy team or defuse the bomb after it has been planted. Ideally, Counter-Terrorists want to prevent the bomb from being planted in the first place, which is why they carefully guard the two locations (called A and B) where the Terrorists can install it.

Because so much revolves around the bomb, the two teams build their strategy so that their bomb-related goals are attained. The T side has the disadvantage of having to assault a fortified position, against CT forces armed with pistols, rifles, and grenades. But it also has the numbers advantage. Because while the CT side needs to divide its forces and defend multiple positions simultaneously, the T side can use 4 or even 5 players to overwhelm and take control of a single area.

One thing that helps the CT side a lot is having defuse kits on 3 or 4 of its players. These kits allow you to defuse the bomb in 5 seconds instead of 10.

Money

Equipment costs money and the team with more money can usually afford to buy better equipment. Winning a round, which lasts for approximately 2 minutes, gives you a lot more money than losing it. Because of that, the team that wins multiple times in a row is likely to continue winning, because it has the resources to buy the best weapons, plenty of grenades, and everything else that is needed.

A player can gather up to $16,000 but initially, everyone starts with $800. CS:GO games are usually Bo30, and after the first 15 rounds the two sides swap places. The Terrorists become the Counter-Terrorists and vice versa. When that happens, everyone loses their money and starts with $800 again.

Players can buy weapons for their teammates and drop them on the ground. So if a team member cannot afford a certain weapon, others can help him.

Weapons and Equipment

CS:GO weapons range from pistols to AWPs. Some are cheap, others are very expensive. Usually, the T side will buy a lot of AK-47s if they can afford them, while the CT side will buy either M4A4 or M4A1-S rifles. On both sides, if the money reserve is good enough, someone will almost always buy an AWP.

Apart from guns and rifles, players also like to buy a kevlar vest and helmet, incendiary grenades, explosive grenades, smoke grenades, and flashbang grenades. Of course, all of these things cost money and teams cannot always afford them. When that happens and their opponent is much better equipped, their odds of winning the round are significantly lower.
