News: ESL Bans YouPorn Sponsored ESports Team
For those who don’t follow the ESports scene, games such as League of Legends or Street Fighter have become wildly popular over the years on an international level. Some championships even rival the attendance and viewership of some major sports such as American Football’s Super Bowl. With such fame came sponsors from various industries such as tech to energy drinks. One genre of sponsorship is finding difficultly being able to participate by using their own team like others have done, this genre is of Adult Entertainment.
Major porn website YouPorn established it’s Team YPÂ and has been competing since 2014 and was just recently banned due to it’s ties to pornography. The ESL informed the public that it already had a rule in place that was against any team whose sponsor had relations with pornography.
Advertising pornography is not legal in the markets we operate in, and the vast majority of partners we’re working with have strict “no drugs, no alcohol, no pornography” rules that we’ve contractually taken on board. These aren’t new rules, but ones that have been in our rulebooks for a long time. We spoke to the manager of Team YP earlier this year and in that conversation we explained the situation and rules in detail, and offered to look for potential alternatives in a bigger group. At the same time, we are consulting with our legal teams about this. We will inform the team and the management as soon as we have any updates.

The heartbroken Team YP has made attempts to reach a compromise by re branding themselves to be more suitable for the ESL. However the ESL, specifically the directors of the ESL, currently stands firm on their decision to move forward with the ban.
Team YP responded on their Twitter to this news to keep fans informed:
We are disappointed by @ESL‘s decision to ban our esports team. We will continue to strive towards professionalism and transparency.

Thank you everyone for your support. Team YP will overcome these obstacles and usher in an age of equal opportunity in esports for all.

Unfortunately, this ban isn’t anything too surprising as a few years ago, major Adult Entertainment website, Brazzers wanted to get into the fighting game scene and was met with similar difficulties that Team YP faced. Despite the massive amounts of progress we as a society have made when it comes to various issues, it seems that Adult Entertainment continues to be looked down upon by incredibly conservative directors.
Granted, the ESL does have to consider it’s international partners who come from various cultures and views who do not tolerate any association with pornography. However, it seems odd to me that adult entertainment is frowned upon while a number of snacks and drinks that could cause health issues with too much use would be welcomed with open arms. I would actually love to see the Adult Entertainment gaming scene form their own tournaments so that they might be able to game with their teams without anyone getting in the way.
What are your thoughts on the ESL banning Team YP just because their sponsor was associated with Adult Entertainment?
