Product Review: C920 Logitech HD Pro Webcam

Being an avid PC gamer, I am constantly on my computer slaying Zombies or building castles in various video games. Often I like to stream my sessions using my webcam to capture my facial reactions to certain moments for the enjoyment of others.

When I first got into streaming I simply went to my local electronics store and bought a standard $20 Gear Head web camera that offered 5.0 MP WebCam w/ 720P HD Video. For the most part, it served me quite well. Sure, I didn’t have incredible quality but did served it’s purpose. Needless to say I had no intention of switching web cameras any time soon.

Then I was asked to test out the C920 Logitech HD Pro Webcam for a duration of time and give my input on how well it works and how it compares to other webcams. From the moment I plugged it in, downloaded the device software and jumped onto my first Skype video call I was blown away by the 1080p quality. It was crisp, clear and reliable. We went on to test out how it worked as a microphone as well and sure enough it also did a great job. My friend had absolutely no problem hearing me and for anyone who has tried to use their webcam as a microphone, you’ll understand when I saw that it is not something that a lot of cameras can do.

While using it for streaming I found that the camera was just slightly off center and when I attempted to position it physically, I only ended up making it worse. After only a few moments, I realized that the device came with it’s own software that actually allows you to zoom in, out, pan and tilt the camera at a whim. I’ll be honest when I say that I did not have a chance to try out their ‘Face Tracking’ and ‘Motion Detection’ features, however I feel confident that because the rest of this product performed so well, my experience with the extra features would have been similar.

Overall I had a positive experience with the C920 Logitech HD Pro Webcam. I will let you know now that the price of the webcam is $100. Normally, this would be a very big drawback for me because the price is so steep compared to my current camera. However, after using the C920 I understand that you are paying for a quality product that more than justifies the cost. The biggest con for me is that I went so long without one, knowing that my streaming sessions could have been all the better had I known about this great product.
