Rising of the Shield Hero is an Absolute Must See for Anime Fans(Review)
If you are a fan of anime like me, you might be used to the classic trope of a young man who is a geek in the real world suddenly finds himself trapped into a fantasy world. In this adventure he overcomes his personal conflicts and comes out on top, usually winning the heart of a princess and gaining a prestigious title.
Rising of the Shield Hero does this but then twists the situation so that everything horrible happens to the main character and it is so enjoyable. Naofumi Iwatani gets pulled into a fantasy world along with three other folks who are all from alternate dimensions of Japan. Each of the three heroes gets a legendary weapon, the main character gets the shield.
Quickly, Naofumi discovers that the Shield Hero is looked down upon by the land and he finds himself falsely accused of terrible crimes. Desperate to survive, he looks to buy a dying slave by the name of Raphtalia. Together they fight to elevate their status in the world through might and magic. Along the way, they encounter a number of difficult situations and make unlikely allies.
Without spoiling the show, there a lot of moments in The Rising of the Shield Hero that left me on the edge of my seat. The writers do a tremendous dance between alleviating the stress and conflict for a brief time before escalating the situation in a flash. The pacing is done so well that it leaves you wanting to binge the entire series. There is never a dull moment or episode that leaves you unfulfilled.
The combat in the show is top-notch as it adds that classic flair of magic and swordplay that we are used to while also introducing unique abilities and special moves that even excite veteran anime fans. You can tell a lot of love was put into this series with every single episode.
Over the course of the season, we watch the main characters grow and change from when they are first introduced and it is so easy to get invested in the group. Every victory and defeat is felt significantly to the point where I personally shouted in joy when certain villains were defeated. There is a to ton enjoy with Rising of the Shield Hero that it is an absolute must for anime fans!
You can find this series on Crunchyroll and expect a season 2 coming soon!
