Hi all! Deegan here to give y’all a review of Tomb Raider!
Going into the movie my expectations were low. Tomb raider was never really a “fandom” to me growing up. I remember the Angelina Jolie versions, which I loved when I was younger, but wasn’t aware it was a video game series until recently.
Lara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer, must push herself beyond her limits when she finds herself on the island where her father disappeared. –IMDB
To my surprise, I LOVED this new take on Tomb Raider and the way they handled Lara Croft who was played by Alicia Vikander. I had constant anxiety from the start to finish but in a good way! There is so much action, adventure, combat scenes and more! I could appreciate the cinematography tremendously because they focused on conveying just how dangerous certain situation were during certain conflicts. That extra time and effort paid off because it added a lot to this film.
Now that you’ve heard what I loved about the movie, I’ll state what I didn’t like. What annoyed me the most about this movie, was Lara Croft’s lack of training. You see her in a boxing ring literally one time and then she starts traveling. From what I do know of the series, Lara is a badass but I feel robbed not seeing at least a short montage of her getting strong, learning to fight, and using a wide array of weapons. One second shes in a boxing ring, the next she’s scaling the side of a mountain by the sea with no climbing gear? While the context clues from the trailer and shallow knowledge of the video franchise, it is assumed she is skilled in such tasks but seeing her learn in a film about her origin would have been entertaining.
The villain of Tomb Raider was nothing special and served his purpose of causing chaos that Lara had to overcome. While it did not hurt the film in any major way, he had the potential to become so much more. On a side note, the friend I took for this movie knew a lot about Tomb Raider franchise and would tell me about the easter eggs hidden in the film. Adding those extra tidbits for long time fans was a great movie on the director’s part!
Overall I do recommend seeing Tomb Raider, while I did enjoy the Jolie films from previous years they have nothing on this new take! Whether or not you are a fan of the franchise, you are going to be entertained by everything it has to offer. For more information, be sure to click here!
