Viking genre continues to inspire the entertainment industry

The Vikings may have existed approximately between the years 790 to 1100, but their exploits and Norse mythology continue to provide inspiration for the entertainment industry to this day as Viking video games and TV shows.

While the topic has inspired Viking fantasy fiction novels and Nordic literature such as Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman, the entertainment industry in particular has profited from the storylines involving Viking warriors and gods.

The popularity of the Viking genre features in many forms of modern entertainment. One example is the Viking themes that feature in various slots and casino games. Vikings of Fortune, which features the Norse gods Odin and Thor, is one of many slots on Paddy Power’s Online Casino, while Vikings Unleashed adds atmosphere with snow falling across the reels as players go on a legendary adventure. We can see how the popularity of the action-adventure aspect of the Viking genre is used to create innovations and characters which attract fans to a whole host of entertainment products. Another innovation is the Netflix comedy series Norsemen, which was directed and written by the Norwegians Jon Iver Helgaker and Jonas Torgersen.

The Viking theme particularly lends itself to big and small screen entertainment. One example is the Netflix TV series Vikings: Valhalla, which tells the story of a Viking invasion of England in the 11th century and features portrayals of well-known Nordic personalities such as Leif Erikson, Freydís Eiríksdóttir and Harald Sigurdsson. The series is the sequel to the popular series Vikings and stars Sam Corlett, Leo Suter and Frida Gustavsson. The examination of Nordic history provides TV makers with fascinating plots and bloody battles to portray on screen.

For most people, the Viking genre is a serious affair. Another form of entertainment that uses Viking themes is the Assassin’s Creed video game franchise. It all began with the release of Assassin’s Creed in 2007 and has since inspired the development of many variations on the Viking theme. The list of games includes those set in fantasy worlds that recreate ancient civilizations like Ancient Greece, Egypt and China. The franchise has developed a multitude of spin-offs, including a TV series, films, comics, novels and board games.

The latest video game release returns to the Viking theme with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarök, where players can gain the powers of Norse gods and go on adventures inspired by Norse myths. Ragnarök, which means doom of the gods, is the name given to a cataclysmic battle in Norse mythology.

In a similar way, the Netflix show Vikings: Valhalla taps into the storyline of battles and adventures provided by Norse mythology. Jeb Stuart, the creator of Vikings: Valhalla, explained the concept behind the sequel and the fascinating storylines and plots which featured in the Viking era: “According to the Norse Sagas if you died honorably in battle, the Valkyries would carry you to Valhalla, where they would eat and drink with their friends and wait for Ragnarök to come around. Valhalla as a final resting place seemed like a fitting title for a show about the end of the Viking era.”

The popularity of the show has led Netflix to confirm that this season will be followed by a further two seasons and we are likely to see more video games from the Assassin’s Creed video game series as the subject shows no signs of losing popularity as an important part of the modern entertainment industry.

Vikings and Norse mythology provide a rich source of storylines in TV shows, films and video games. The heroic feats of the Viking gods continue to inspire fascination to this day and due to its timeless nature, the theme is likely to produce inspiration for the entertainment industry for many years to come.
