Cosplayer of the Week: Maki

We have such an amazing cosplayer for you today by the name of Maki! She is super kawaii in everything she does, hustles to create content for fans, and very kind. After following her for a few months and seeing how much confidence she has, we knew we had to reach out for an interview and were so excited when she accepted!

The Geek Lyfe:  What is your cosplay origin story?

Maki:  Maybe everything begins when I was in primary school, I was a huge fan of “sailor moon” and “Cardcaptor Sakura”, like many other children, I always wish to turn into my favorite character, but I didn’t know about cosplay until middle school, when I once saw a cosplay group from Indonesia, I have forgotten their name but they were my biggest idol at that moment. They’re the one who brought me to cosplay.

TGL:  Out of all the years you have done cosplay, what has been one of your more favorite/proudest memories?

M:  Oh, I have this one favorite memory, it was 5 years ago, I was hanging out with my friend on that day, we were walking on the street chatting and joking around, then there was a cute young girl approached me and asked “are you CB (my nickname at that time), I am a big fan of yours” and then she searched in her pocket and give me a candy and said that’s all she got at that moment because she didn’t expect to meet me so suddenly. That was a very cute memory that I will never forget.

TGL:  Many people online will simply see one of your images, appreciate it for the moment and move on. However, I know that a lot of care and time goes into photoshoots. Could you describe your process for a cosplay photoshoot from the concept to when it hits your fans?

M:  Some of my costumes are ordered, some are tailored, depending on the complexity, even though I’m an ero model, I’m actually a very shy person, so my friend (which is a cosplayer too) helps me a lot with my project, she is my important photographer.

TGL:  Out of all the cosplays you have ever done which one was your personal favorite even if it was not super well received by fans?

M:  My favorite? Hmmmm, probably Rem with the blue swimwear that I took beside the pool, I don’t know why, I just like it (´,,•ω•,,)♡

TGL:  Subbed or Dubbed Anime?

M:  I’m a huge fan of “kuroshitsuji”, subbed of course. Fun fact, the first character I cosplayed was Ciel Phantomhive from “Kuroshitsuji” aka “Black butler”!

TGL:  It is apparent that you hustle to provide content for fans but when you actually have a day off, how do you spend it?

M:  On my day off, I like to go dancing, oh, not in the club silly. I dance at the Swing social dance event. I do Swing dancing, and I just attended a Latin dance class. It’s really fun even though I’m so bad at it!

TGL:  You just radiate such confidence and the swagger of a champion. However, a lot of geeks often struggle with overwhelming self-doubt, anxiety, and depression. When you have those bad days and get down on yourself, what do you do to remind yourself that you are wonderful?

M:  Like many other, I do have depressing days, and sometimes malicious comments do hurt my feeling, but there are always people messaging me and telling me all the sweet things, I don’t call them fans, I call them supporters, they’re so nice and they support me a lot, and I really appreciate it.

TGL:  What is one piece of advice you wish you received when you first got into modeling/cosplay?

M: If I could go back time, I would tell myself to be more confident, and just have fun, don’t worry if this wig would fit my face or am I look fat wearing that costume, don’t even mind those things. Just have fun and make more friends who have the same cosplay hobby.

TGL: Where can we find you online?

M: You can find me online at twitter.com/MakiMakiichan
